Reviews from the Three Rooms

Wei Ling Chong

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

"We stayed in the Front Court Suite for five nights while visiting the George Town Festival. The balcony is exactly as described — you can hear the street in the morning, which takes some adjustment, but you are also watching the city from above it. Breakfast in the air well was the best part of the day. We came down late and found the table had been quietly reset and more coffee brought. It is that kind of house."

"I spent two weeks in the Air Well Room while working on a research project at the Penang State Museum. The room is not large, but it has everything a person actually needs — desk, good light in the morning, and the courtyard below. The cross-ventilation is real; I barely needed the standing fan. One thing worth noting: the bathroom is shared with another room when that room is occupied, which it was for a few days mid-stay. This was manageable but worth knowing."

"My mother's family is from Penang, and I came back for the first time as an adult to understand the city she grew up in. I stayed in the Rear Court Room for three weeks. James was a patient guide to the streets around the house — he knew which clan association buildings were still active and which coffee shops had been run by the same family for forty years. Mak Nooriah's cooking was another matter entirely. The evenings were good."

"I am a documentary filmmaker and I had a month of shooting in George Town. The Rear Court Room became my base of operations. The desk is solid and the light in the afternoon suits editing. The garden was useful when I needed to stop looking at a screen. The household left me alone when I needed to work and was ready to talk when I came downstairs. I found the library particularly good — the section on Peranakan foodways was unexpectedly useful for a project I was researching separately."

"Three nights in the Front Court Suite, which was enough to understand why some people choose to stay much longer. The building is the real thing — not a reconstruction. You can tell from the way the floors settle at different hours of the day and the particular quality of the light through the shutters. Breakfast was simple and sufficient. We found the heritage zone more navigable staying here than we might have from a hotel on the northern side of the island."

"Ten days in the Air Well Room. I was writing and needed somewhere quiet with a desk and reliable light. The air well room is both of those things. I worked every morning and spent the afternoons in the city. The weekday afternoon tea was a small pleasure I did not expect to look forward to as much as I did. James recommended the Kapitan Keling mosque and the Syed Alatas Mansion, both of which were worthwhile."

In More Detail

Extended Stay Accounts

The Situation

A doctoral researcher from Leiden University needed a month-long base in George Town to conduct archival research into the Straits Settlements period. Standard hotel accommodation was either too expensive for a sustained stay or too removed from the heritage core to be practical.

The Stay

Six weeks in the Rear Court Room, with the fortnightly rate. James Lim helped with introductions at the Penang Heritage Trust and the Penang State Archives. The weekday evening meals meant she did not lose time to cooking during the week.

The Outcome

The research chapter she had planned for the month was completed, with additional material gathered from sources James had suggested. She has since returned for a second stay of four weeks while completing the thesis.

"The house has become part of my methodology. I think better here than anywhere else I have worked."

The Situation

A couple from Melbourne arrived in Penang for ten days. One partner was attending a heritage conservation conference; the other needed a workspace to continue client work remotely. They wanted to share a room and be within walking distance of the conference venue at City Hall.

The Stay

Ten nights in the Front Court Suite. The suite's sitting area gave the partner working remotely a separate space from the bed. The balcony above Lebuh Pantai was used as a morning reading spot before the day's work began.

The Outcome

Both partners completed their respective work. They extended their stay by two nights and spent the final two days visiting the Penang Hill railway and the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, which the household had recommended.

"Having a proper sitting room changed the dynamic of working together in the same space. We'd do it again."
